Valve founder, and Reddit hero, Gabe Newell confirmed that a next-gen Source engine is in the works. Files for Source 2 was found earlier in the year within the code of Source Filmmaker, which suggested that Valve had been working on its new engine for quite some time. Well, Valve finally confirmed that they are indeed, and in the most unexpected of places at that.
On November 3rd, a bunch of fans from game board, /v/, got together and paid a visit to Gabe Newell to wish him a happy birthday. The fans showered Newell with gifts, a massive cake and a card, and an actual Mann Co Crate which contained a combat helmet, which Newell had to shell out $2.50 for to unlock.
Of course, the fans had all of this recorded. The full 52-min video of the birthday visit is below. During the visit, a fan asked if Valve was already working on a new engine, to which Newell very casually replied, "We’ve been working on Valve’s new engine stuff for a while, we have just been waiting for a game to roll it out with." Might we suggest the fine folks at Valve a game called Half Life 3, maybe?
Anyways, following Newell's reply, another fan asked if the "new stuff" was going to be an extension to the current Source engine, or an entirely new engine. Newell only simply replied with a "Yeah!".
Well, there is. A bunch of fans got of Newell what us media folks couldn't for the past few years. Well, done /v/. We also uncovered the secret to Valve's heart. Cake.
The cake was never a lie.
